In this episode were gonna talk about the best controller, speakers and headphones to get you started in your DJ journey.

Best Budget DJ Controller - 2IZdqrC

Best Budget DJ Controller (Serato DJ) - 2IZMech

Best Budget DJ Speakers - 2Izlezu

Budget DJ Speakers with blue tooth - 2H3zpQf

Best Budget DJ Headphones - 2GHMTh9

I've personally tested and used these items in my gigs and I can say without a doubt that these guys cover everything you may want and need from an awesome DJ set up.

When you start dj'ing you gotta start basic, but even at more advance levels of dj'ing you're still utilizing 90% of what a basic dj set up can do.

And in my opinion it's not what you use, it's how you use it that matters most.

So these items may be for beginner djs but don't let that fool you, because these guys can last you life time and bring your career from nothing to something if you use them right.

All my other GEAR:

Backpack I use for DJ’ing: 2IVGtfL

Add on controller for DJ’ing on the go (Serato): 2us2jUV

Cheaper add on controller for DJ’ing on the go (Rekordbox): 2GyrhXz

Best Budget Turntables EVER: 2GgQNNJ

Best Budget DJ Mixer EVER: 2uoCPYJ

Best Turntables EVER: 2IXT0iO

Best DJ Mixer EVER: 2Gf9Xni

Best cheap 4 deck DJ controller: 2DZnHAD

CAMERA I use for shooting everything: 2urk5aV

Lens I use for vlogging and overhead/flatlay shots: 2unSrfa

Lens I use for delicious close ups and bokeh shots: 2GgPMFp

Microphone I use for crispy audio: 2pJqSbs

Tripod/Selfie stick I use everywhere: 2uoC6qt

My favorite controller is the DDJ-RB.

I use this thing in most of my videos, and it does the job.

From scratching to mixing, this controller does everything I need it to do.

It comes with the Rekordbox DJ software so that means that all you have to do is install the software and plug your controller and you’re good to go.

I don’t really mind it’s construction, and I really value how light and budget friendly it is.

What makes this controller my favorite controller compared to other expensive ones that I have are 2 things:

1. It’s small and light

So I can just throw this controller in my car or backpack, and I’m good to go.

2 is that it’s usb powered.

I don’t have to bring a power adapter to make this thing work.

The layout is universal so if ever you do upgrade, it’ll feel like the right step up.

I also enjoy the size of the cogwheel and the placement of all the knobs and buttons.

The difference between this cheap controller to this controller (DDJ-RX) is very minimal.

They both do the same thing and at the end of the day, it’s not what you use but how you use it.

The DDJ-RB is a plug and play controller, perfect for the beginner and even veteran who just needs something that just works well and performs professionally.

So you got the DDJ-RB, what’s next? The Speakers you’re gonna use to practice it with!

For that we have the DM-40.

What’s nice about these speakers is that you don’t have to buy these units individually, they come in a pair.

They’re minimal, small and light weight. Perfect for small house parties and bed room DJ’ing.

They sound clear and bassy, and can get pretty loud if you want them too.

They accept RCAs, and a jack. And these speakers come with an RCA to cable.

Since they’re the latest in technology there is a variant of this that utilizes blue tooth.

So you can plug your controller into these speakers and even connect your phone to them as well.

The DM-40 is a simple, versatile and budget friendly pair of speakers that do the job, and sound great at it.

Next up is another essential item, when DJ’ing. Your headphones.

The pair I recommend are the HDJ-X5.

Like they’re speaker counterpart, these headphones sound equally as great if not better and more clearer due to the isolation of sound you get when you put these things on. And my goodness do these things sound great.

You can clearly hear almost the drums, synths, and hi hats of a song. And hearing those those frequencies really help you gauge and adjust your EQ when mixing.

But my favorite feature of the x5 is the bang for buck you get when you compare this model to it’s older brother the HDJ-X10.

The HDJ-X5 are the perfect pair of headphones for DJ’ing for beginners. The sound quality is amazing and the value you get from these headphones is even better.

Pioneer DDJ-SB review
Pioneer DDJ-SB review.

The Pioneer DDJ-SB is Pioneer's entry level controller for Serato DJ. It's a lot smaller than the SR, SX and SZ, but it still packs some nice features. In this video we take a look at the main functions when you use the controller with the Serato DJ Intro software (limited version of Serato DJ).

In my opinion the DDJ-SB is a nice entry level controller, but I would suggest that you buy the full version of Serato DJ to really get the most out of the controller.

What DJs REALLY do

Check out my latest progressive house mix: justarman/the-dark-hour-vol-9

Or what they SHOULD be doing with their time, when they are not playing a pre-recorded set!

After the video of Laidback Luke, Steve Aoki, and Sander van Doorn from a festival went viral, where all 3 were "DJing" together, and Art Department criticized them for it, and someone made a similar video of them to a make them eat their words, I thought it would be fun to show people what DJs REALLY do, or what they SHOULD be doing instead of playing air guitar, twiddling knobs necessarily, or generally doing the same thing the crowd is doing but in the DJ booth.

For everyone that has been asking, the tracks are:

1) Hot Since 82 - Knee Deep in Louise
2) Green Velvet - Bigger than Prince (Hot Since 82 remix)

Also, some shameless self-promotion: check out my SoundCloud page at justarman to hear some tech house, techno, and dark/deep progressive mixes.

Can you become a DJ in 3 months?
Today's question comes from a viewer who was asked to DJ at the school prom in three months. The only (major) problem is that he has never DJ'ed before! The school did give him a controller to take home and practice.

Would it be possible for him to be ready to DJ at the prom in three months time? Let's talk about it.

What's your DJ name?
What's your DJ name?

It's a problem for a lot of beginning DJ's: coming up with a DJ name. This will be the name that represent you when you DJ. It will be on flyers, posters, mixtapes, etc.

I'm not great at thinking of names, but I can give you a couple of pointers.

- Try to keep it personal. Choose a name that represents who you are as a person or as a DJ, or both!
- Some people choose to use their real name.
- Maybe you have a nickname that works well as a DJ name.
- Don't name yourself after something just because it's relevant/popular today. It might not be considered to be relevant next year.
- Don't give yourself a name that raises a certain expectation if you can't deliver! So don't name yourself DJ Perfect Mix if your mixes are not perfect every time ;)
- Pick a name that you can stick with for a long time. You can't change your name every year because that will confuse or lose your audience.

I hope this helps you out. Good luck! Share any tips you have for other DJ in the comment section.

Serato vs Traktor vs Virtual DJ
Serato vs Traktor vs Virtual DJ.

When you decide that you want to DJ with turntables (or CD players), but you also want to be able to take advantage of the new technological developments, a DVS (Digital Vinyl System) is your best option.

The three best known (and most used) systems are Serato DJ (or Scratch Live), Traktor Pro (or Scratch) and Virtual DJ.

How do you choose which system is right for you? Is there a 'best' system? Serato and Traktor are considered to be the professional options and even though Virtual DJ has the reputation for being the lesser system, it is without a doubt a complete system with lots of functionality.

In my opinion the choice would still be between Serato and Traktor and I see a strong resemblance to the IOS vs Android discussion that has been going on forever. I feel that there is no best system, but that there are clear differences between the two system and each has it's own vibe and philosophy.

Serato is the more straight forward system aimed at the people who came from turntables and want to continue to DJ the way they have always done.

Traktor is more about adding a level of production/performance to the DJ experience (live remixing, etc) and offers a vast amount of customization options.

You just need to do the research and discover which system fits you better.

First of all, it starts by being a music lover and if you feel you are a music lover, that's a good start. I know there are a lot of people that start off with showing up at to party, listening to music and trying to come up with different mixes in their head, of mixing different genres and mixing different types of music together. That's how it starts, you know. You like, oh I got this idea, it think this song might go with this song, so like you becoming curious right. So it starts off with just the idea of wanting to mix music or wanting to mix various genres of music and then you start focusing on the hardware and the different various types of equipment that's out there. I know when I first started I was listening to the radio, that's what inspired me to wanting to become a DJ, listening to other DJ's. When I first heard Red Alert and Chuck Chill Out on the radio, I was, you know, scratching my head like, you know, what is it that they are doing. How is it that the music does not stop, that the music is continuous? And they are also incorporating some scratching. I did not really understand what exactly they were doing until I kept on asking myself that question in my head which led to meeting some people that actually had some equipment and they actually let me use some of their equipment. And from there, that flame, you know, was sparked inside me where I was just like, this is what I want to do. I want to learn how to use this equipment; I want to learn how to get my ideas out through the speakers so people can hear my mixing ideas and I can actually execute them. If this is something you want to get into, I would start by checking out different sites on the internet. Such as , see what they have, see if there is any specials, see if there is any deals. Don't just jump into it, try to maybe tag along or have a friend tag along with you that knows about the art form. They might be a DJ or a producer and they know about equipment and brands and stuff. I would definitely recommend the classes; I would definitely sign up for some classes. Give it a go, test the waters. If it is something that you definitely feel you have a connection with, by all means, pursue and follow that goal or that dream that you have. And I hope, you know, whoever sees this, if you do decide to take any classes here at rock and soul then I will be able to help you accomplish those goals in a short amount of time.
